In the field of architectural design, creativity and innovation have always driven the creation of the world’s most iconic structures. Today, 3D sand printing and advanced sand casting technologies are revolutionising the industry, offering architects unprecedented possibilities.

Finecast is leading this transformation as a global pioneer in sand casting, our cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities are not only pushing the boundaries of architectural design but also fundamentally changing how complex shapes and structures are conceived and realised.

Traditionally, casting in architecture has been limited by the constraints of conventional mould-making methods, which often restricted design freedom, geometric complexity and could be expensive to manufacture in low volume.

Finecast’s use of cutting-edge 3D sand printing technology is a game-changer, that redefines the possibilities for architects to create the most amazing geometric cast structures, regardless of size or cast material within days of casting simulation validation.

The Power of 3D Sand Printing

3D sand printing involves layer-by-layer deposition of sand, bound together with a binder to create highly detailed moulds up to 4 metres square. For large batch requirements multiple moulds can be produced at once to maximise the best possible use of the build space.

Finecast operates the latest voxeljet 3D sand printers that provide the flexibility to print using a range of sand media, from silica sand to thermally efficient synthetic sands like Cerabead®. This versatility enhances casting design, surface finish, and tolerances, while also providing the ability to cast in ferrous and non-ferrous materials, from low-temperature aluminium alloys to high-temperature iron and steel alloys.

Whether it’s creative, artistic architectural elements, personalised or branded designs, complex geometric forms, free-form shapes or high-integrity 3D structural parts, Finecast’s advanced 3D sand printing capabilities and expertise are enabling architects to explore new realms of creativity and expression.

Sand Casting: Where Tradition Meets Innovation

Sand casting is one of the oldest methods of manufacturing, with a history that dates back thousands of years. Despite its ancient origins, sand casting remains highly relevant today thanks to continuous innovation and technological advancements. Finecast has masterfully merged the time-tested process of sand casting with modern 3D sand printing, creating a powerful synergy that redefines architectural casting.

By integrating 3D sand printing with other technologically advanced sand casting processes, Finecast offers a unique blend of creative freedom, precision and rapid production. This seamless process produces high-quality sand cast structures with unmatched detail and complexity, catering to the diverse needs of the architectural industry.

Finecast’s manufacturing process includes casting design, virtual casting simulation, mould assembly design, and 3D sand printing. This is followed by prototype and production foundry mould assembly and metal pouring, metallurgy lab testing, non-destructive testing, CNC machining, and CMM dimensional validation—all ensuring the highest quality and precision at every stage.

Whether it’s a one-off artistic piece, a prototype, or a large-scale production run, Finecast is committed to excellence at every stage of the casting process.

Versatility and Guaranteed Material Properties

Finecast has decades of experience in sand casting a wide-range of metals and alloys—including aluminium, iron, steel, and bronze—ensuring that the final cast product not only meets but exceeds aesthetic and functional requirements. This versatility opens up a plethora of possibilities for architects, allowing them to select the perfect material for their specific project needs, be it for durability, visual appeal, or historical accuracy.

Finecast is an aerospace approved manufacturing company, with an accredited metallurgical laboratory that provides complete mechanical testing for all alloys, spectrographic analysis, ultrasonic testing, x-ray radiography and CT scanning, 3D optical measurement scanning, ensuring complete structural verification to ISO standard materials.

Diverse Applications: From Art to Architecture

The fusion of 3D sand printing and sand casting is unlocking new possibilities in a wide range of architectural and artistic applications. Some of the most exciting and innovative uses include:

  • Works of Art: Artists and designers are leveraging these advanced casting techniques to create sculptures and installations with unparalleled detail and complexity. The freedom to cast intricate designs in metals like bronze and aluminium is opening new creative avenues in public art and gallery pieces.
  • Fluid Roof & Building Panels: Modern architecture often demands dynamic, flowing structures that traditional methods struggle to produce. With 3D sand printing, Finecast can create fluid, organic roof and building panels that seamlessly integrate with the building’s overall design, providing both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.
  • Organic Structures: Natural, biomimetic forms are becoming increasingly popular in contemporary architecture. 3D sand printing allows for the casting of complex, organic structures that mirror the forms found in nature, offering both beauty and functionality in spaces like atriums, pavilions, and green buildings.
  • Building Facades: Facades are a building’s most visible feature, and with Finecast’s technology, architects can design and produce facades with intricate patterns, textures, and geometries that were previously impossible to achieve. From sleek, modern designs to ornate, historical reproductions, the possibilities are endless.
  • Custom Architectural Elements: Whether it’s custom staircases, railings, or decorative panels, Finecast’s sand casting capabilities can bring any unique architectural element to life, providing designers with the tools to create bespoke solutions tailored to specific project needs.
